Healthy
Choices (HC) Committees at Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte are
comprised of parents, school administration, faculty and counselors whose
purpose is to promote student health and wellness. Acalanes established their
committee in December, 2004 and supported the creation of Healthy Choices at the
other three schools in the Spring of 2006. The school site committees are
currently working under auspices of the respective Parents’ Clubs and PTAs with
faculty and administration support. Each school site is developing programs,
strategies and resources to address the health and wellness needs of their
student population.
HEALTHY CHOICES IS LOOKING FOR STUDENT MEMBERS!
We are seeking at least one student from each grade level at Las Lomas. You, more than anyone, can help us speak to the issues that are important to you and your peers. We are planning teen panels this year and are looking for students to participate in both the panels and topic selection.
Education and awareness programs being developed by Healthy Choices Committees are designed for teens, but also speak to parents and/or the general community.
Topics include but are not limited to: tobacco, alcohol and drug use, healthy eating and sleep habits, emotional support, stress reduction, and learning life long physical fitness. Some of the programs at the various schools include:
- Hosted grade specific parent meetings with teen panels at Back to School Night.
- Stress reduction programs during the lunch break.
- Brown Bag Lunch presentations.
- Share health and wellness information for teens, parents and families through the eNews and websites.
This year the AUHSD began working with the Healthy Choices Committees to advance discussion and implementation of programs that promote wellness. Joint efforts so far include:
AUHSD printed and distributed the revised and updated “Healthy Choices for Teens” a Parents Guide (click here to download).
Reaching out to the elementary and middle school districts that feed into AUHSD to begin to provide continuity in wellness education from K - 12.
Participate in the Strategic Planning Process to ensure that support services address students’ health needs and that there is parity of health services across all campuses.
